  • Typequick Professional Course Overview

Typequick Professional is a comprehensive typing tutor, featuring ten easy and interesting lessons to learn to type. Then extend and consolidate your keyboarding expertise with five additional courses to increase your speed, accuracy, keypad and punctuation typing skills.

    Keyboard Lessons

This course teaches the correct finger positioning and associated keys of the alphabetic/numeric keyboard in ten stuctured lessons. This is your starting point to touch typing!

Lessons 1 - 6 teach the letters of the alphabet in upper and lower case. Each one begins by introducing the new keys with finger placement exercises. Illustrations and simulations on your computer screen show you the correct finger usage for each key. Each self-paced lesson builds on the skills learned in the previous lessons and at each step you are encouraged and motivated to continue. The program alternates between speed practise and accuracy lessons to improve your skills in both areas.

Lessons 7 - 8 teach you how to use the number keys. These are the keys on the top row of the keyboard.

Lessons 9 - 10 focus on building your speed and accuracy.

Each lesson has three parts. In parts A and B you learn new keys and combine them with previously learned letters. Part C is a consolidation lesson where all keys learnt so far are combined and presented in sentences and longer paragraphs. You will receive a progress report at the end of each lesson part.

Speed Challenge You can choose from six lessons designed to increase speed. The emphasis is on speed so don't worry about mistakes, just type as fast as you can.
Accuracy Challenge Doing this course, you will copy-type text that is designed to keep you interested while having to press the correct key to progress.
Advanced Challenge You can choose from seven lessons designed to improve accuracy. The emphasis is on accuracy so the correct letter must be typed to advance.
Punctuation Challenge Teaches the most commonly used punctuation keys.
Keypad Lessons Teaches the number pad for data entry in three easy lessons.

    Settings

Typequick offers several settings to customise your learning experience. Features such as target speed, fonts, colours, audio preferences, whether one or two spaces are used after a full stop or period and the type of keyboard being used. Settings are not available in the trial lesson.

    Reports

You will be given a detailed progress report in graph form showing the speed and accuracy achieved for each letter at the end of each lesson part. You’ll see as in the example below, the speed and accuracy achieved for each key.

    Typequick Professional Reporting

The Speed and Error % for each of the keys are shown as bars in the chart. The Goal Speed and Average Speed are shown as lines. It’s a great way to see which lessons you may need to repeat. Any keys covered in other lessons you have completed are also included in the last results shown.

Learning Keyboarding

More information about learning how to touch type, efficiently and effectively.

  • Music while learning - does it improve the learning rate?

Many experts have researched and concluded that people are more receptive when they are listening to Mozart's music or any other Baroque music. We suggest you select the Largo and Adagio movements while doing Typequick lessons. We have not put any music on our CD as everyone has different tastes in music.

  • Can students learn at their own pace with Typequick?

Yes! Everyone learns at different speeds according to their abilities. Typequick recognizes this and guides students on the shortest path determined by intelligent analysis of their individual performance - without taking learning control away.

Typequick has short lessons and easy paragraphs of text so that students enjoy themselves as they learn. Typequick provides silent remediation to remove weak keys to keep the feedback positive.

  • Is mental rehearsal and creative visualisation an important part of learning?

Most definitely! Ron Lawrence of Sydney has re-developed and refined these concepts in relation to learning to touch type.

The help file in each Typequick course contains information on creative visualisation and other tips. We also provide a Mental Rehearsal keyboard layout card for you in PDF format.

If you are not able to view PDF files, then download the free Adobe Reader software first.

  • Posture - is this important?

One of the most important messages that has come from all the ergonomic studies is that posture is important. Particularly when learning new keyboard skills, the adoption of correct posture is very important to avoid cramps and muscle aches.

The positioning of the keyboard, screen and chair can dramatically affect your typing speed and comfort when sitting in front of a computer for any length of time. The Typequick course teaches and contains useful information that will help you feel more comfortable when learning keyboard skills and using your computer.

  • How long will it take to learn to type with all 10 fingers?

It takes less than 10 hours to learn to type with 10 fingers at about 15 words per minute and another 5 hours to reach hand writing speed of about 20 WPM. The best way is to learn over a short period of time. A lesson a day over 10 days and a further 5 days of practice-typing is recommended.

If you have the energy we have a 2 day plan which is included in your Typequick User Guide. It is not for the faint hearted but will build your skill quickly!

Typequick online typing test

Try our free online typing test to assess your typing skills today.

  • I'm not sure what line to type next?

The test program always keeps the top line in the test text window as the current one which you should be typing.

When you complete a line (successfully), the test program scrolls the test text window up one line, so the line you just typed disappears from the test text window.

You should only need to look at the top line in the test text window, the program will keep moving the test text up so the top line contains the line you should be typing.

  • Do I double space after a punctuation mark?

No, the test program is set to expect single spacing

  • Do I press the spacebar or the enter key at the end of a line?

    Either one will do.

  • The test text stopped scrolling?

When you finish a line, the test program tries to see if what you typed corresponds to the top line in the test text window. If the test program can't find a good enough match between what you typed and the top line, the test text window won't be scrolled up one line.

If this happens, you should either backspace over what you have typed and try to get back in synch with the test program, or just type the top line visible in the test text window from the start of the line.

Typequick Online is hosted on Google's servers. Sometimes problems occur on the servers preventing our product from responding. Often these errors are transient and trying again almost immediately will produce the correct response. On very rare occasions you may have to wait an hour or two for the servers to recover.

  • Nothing happens when I put the USB into the computer?

This can mean one of two things.

    1. Your computer has a faulty USB port

    2. The Typequick USB thumb drive is faulty

Computers/laptops are manufactured with multiple USB ports. Take the Typequick USB thumb drive out of the current port and insert it into another port. If nothing happens, the Typequick USB thumb drive is faulty. Contact Typequick Support to troubleshoot the issue.
  • How do I start the Typequick program from the USB thumb drive?

Some computers are set up to auto-run the program on a USB, but others are not.

If your computer does not start running the Typequick program when the USB is inserted into a USB slot, you should use the file browser on the computer to inspect the files on the USB. In the root folder of the USB will be the Typequick program which you should run. The program will be called one of the following depending on the USB stick and the operating system on the computer.

  • When I start the Typequick program I get a message asking for a license key?

    Problem:

There is a timing issue on some computers that will result in the Typequick USB drive program prompting for the entry of a license key. A license key is not required for the USB drive version.

To resolve this timing issue, follow the instructions below:

    Instructions:

    1. Download the file TQServerConnection.jar from the link Download Update to your computer.

    2. Insert the Typequick USB Drive into the USB port on your computer.

    3. On your computer, navigate to the content of the Typequick USB drive. The files and folders in the USB drive is hidden. You will need to set the option on your computer to show hidden files and folder. Use the links below to guide you through the process:

Show hidden file in Windows XP

Show hidden file in Windows Vista

Show hidden file in MAC OSX

    4. After enabling hidden files and folder. The JARS folder will now display in the USB Drive. Copy the file TQServerConnection.jar into the JARS folder.

    5. Safely remove the USB Drive from the computer.

    6. Insert the Typequick USB drive into the computer and start the Typequick program.

  • There is no sound coming through?

The amount of sound in the course varies with product. Typequick Professional has a lot of sound clips in the introduction lessons, but limited sound in the remaining Basic Keyboard lessons, and none in the Advanced courses.

Sound could be turned off in the Settings section of the program (accessed from the main menu screen immediately after logging on).

Sound could also be disabled by the computer or by a server (if accessing is done through Citrix or Microsoft Terminal Services).

Check that you are able to get sounds through your Internet browser and Adobe Flashplayer by trying to play a Flash-based movie clip from a site like YouTube.

  • The voices and music seem to stutter occasionally?

The sound clips are delivered over the Internet connection and if the connection speed becomes low then you will notice gaps and stutters in the sound. If the problem is congestion, waiting for a quieter period will deal with the problem.

  • The images on the screen seem to be split into pieces?

Most of the images used in the Typequick products are indeed made up of multiple images, but that fact is normally not noticeable when the broadband connection speed is high enough. If the broadband connection is too slow or is experiencing congestion you will start to see the "splitting" phenomenon.

If the problem is congestion, waiting for a quieter period will deal with the problem.

  • I type but nothing happens?

Your typing may be directed to the wrong place. This can happen if you swap back and forth from one program window to another, or the browser decides to set the focus in the wrong place.

To overcome the problem, click the mouse over the region you should be typing into and then start typing.

For screens where the program displays a line of text which you should type, the typing region is directly below the line of text.

For screens where the program displays a large keyboard and highlights a key which you should type, just click anywhere on the large keyboard before starting to type.

  • What is the difference between Typequick for Students and Typequick Professional?

Typequick for Students has an animated adventure built into the famous Typequick structured course. Students set off on an interactive adventure with Kewala around Australia visiting new places and meeting new characters as they learn the keys of the keyboard and evolve new typing skills. It's full of interesting challenges, bonuses, adventures, animation, music and fun.

Typequick Professional is a more formal course. It has sound and some animation to simulate correct finger usage but it does not centre around an adventure nor does the text typed build a story.

Both courses contain the same proven learning techniques, effective remediation and instant feedback. Both courses contain a learning the keyboard course, speed and accuracy courses, keypad course and punctuation course.

Both courses can be used with students aged from 6 years onwards.

  • Does Typequick use a structured, recognised teaching method?

The student is guided through the logically planned and structured course. This avoids the anxiety inducing choices found in other typing programs. Exercises are mainly sentences with limited random letter drills. The course is used by over four million people in 11 countries. It is internationally acclaimed and used by teachers and professionals in over 3,000 schools, colleges and universities.
