Altering Installation Details

Sometimes information entered during the installation process is incorrect and needs to be changed (for example, the location of database drivers). In some cases, the best approach is simply to uninstall the application and install again, entering the correct data. However, some items are simply altered by changing property files so details on such alterations are provided here.

In addition, there are a number of parameters that can be tuned at a site and these parameters are described in this topic.

There is a further caveat on altering the installation. Once a licence have been entered into the Typequick application, the application locks itself to the machine and so operations which involve moving the installation around will be treated as a breach of the copy protection mechanism. If you need to move the installation around after entering a licence in ways which are NOT described below, you should uninstall the application first and then reinstall. Refer to the topics Uninstalling Typequick and Reinstalling Typequick.

Most of the items covered below are found in the TQ.Properties file which is in the data folder set during the installation process.

Changing TCP/IP Addresses and Port Numbers

The entries in the TQ.Properties file for the UnicastIPAddress and UnicastPortNumber are used to point at a network TQ Server (if the installation is for a TQ Client or a TQ Admin), or, they are the addresses to be used by TQ Server (if the installation contains a TQ Server component).

These values may be changed as required.

The MulticastIPAddress and MulticastPortNumber are used for TQ Server discovery operations. Only change these values if you use different multicast values locally.

The TimeToLive parameter may be adjusted to restrict how far packets go looking for servers.

A restart of TQ Server is required for the changes to take effect when the changes are being made at a TQ Server installation.

Changing JDBC Parameters

If you are using your own database at the TQ Server end, you may need to manually alter the JDBC parameters. There are four lines affecting the JDBC connection directly, these are JDBCDriver, JDBCURL, JDBCLoginID and JDBCPassword. These can be changed to suit and TQServer restarted at anytime.

TQ Server opens a number of connections to the database at one time in order to allow parallel operations (this reduces the response time when many users are attached to the server). You can increase or restrict the number of simultaneous connections by adjusting the JDBCConnectionPoolMin and JDBCConnectionPoolMax values.

Changing TCP/IP Timeouts

Depending on the network and machine mix at the site, it may be necessary to lengthen some of the timeouts. The values that can be adjusted have the word "Timeout" in them and it is reasonably easily to determine their function from their names. Timeouts should be lengthened if users experience timeout errors.

Changing Folder Locations

The pointer to the resources (lesson text, images and sound files) may be changed if the resources are moved about. This entry is called "Resources in the TQ.Properties file. Changing other folder locations manually is not recommended and should be effected by a reinstall.
